Norfolk State University is using a $3.2 million grant to break new ground in graduate research education. The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) requires doctoral candidates to break out of their discipline-specific backgrounds and cross disciplinary boundaries—an approach that is expected to shake up traditional graduate research education. Dr. Atwater Launches New Initiative

Dr. Tony Atwater recently launched a new initiative referred to as the Spartan Crusade for Academic Success (SCAS). Representatives from Bank of America presented the President with a $20,000 check to support SCAS, essentially becoming the first corporate sponsor of this major initiative. Through Bank of America’s generosity, NSU can begin program implementation with Booker T. Washington High School, its first partner school.



$5 Million Grant Will Train Healthcare Workers

U.S. Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner recently announced the award of a $5 million federal grant to a public-private partnership of colleges, universities and hospitals in Hampton Roads and on the Peninsula to provide education, training and job placement assistance in the healthcare field. The U.S. Department of Labor competitive grant program targets healthcare jobs which are in demand and for which local employers have had to rely upon H-1B visas to hire foreign workers.
